Drug interaction describes the status where the effectiveness of a medicine is modified by combination with other medicine. Especially, in the countries like Korea, Japan and China, where herbal medicines as traditional medicines for a long time, combination therapy with western and herbal medicines has been routinely used. Prediction and provision for the results of interaction between the multicomponent-centered herbal medicines and single component-centered western medicines is needed to maintain the therapeutic effects and prevent the adverse drug reactions. For these works, specific and detailed the report system of adverse drug reaction with causality assesment has to be built for the herbal medicines as for the western medicines of which safety evaluation is constantly ongoing from the development stage to post-marketing stage. With this herbal medicines specific adverse event reporting system, we could identify and predict previously unknown side effect of herbal medicines. Moreover, we could predict the results of interaction between the herbal and western medicines and might deduct the optimum combination of herbal and western medicines in advance.
